SUMMARY:The Actual Dance - solo play at Tusten Theatre
DESCRIPTION:DVAA presents “The Actual Dance\,” an award-winning solo play about the transformative power of love in the face of illness. Written by Sam Simon and performed by Chuk Obasi. \nThe autobiographical piece is based on writer Sam Simon’s experience as caregiver for his wife\, Susan\, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. \n“The Actual Dance” refers to the sensation Simon experienced during this time of crisis. He imagined a brightly lit ballroom with an orchestra tuning their instruments\, all for the moment when he and his wife would have to part for good. \n“People will come up to me after the show and tell of similar experiences\,” he said. “They’re afraid to talk about it out loud for fear of being called crazy.” \nThe play interweaves flashbacks of Simon’s courtship of his future wife and of her previous medical scares and surgeries. \n“I am humbled by the fact that people have told me it has changed their lives\,” Simon said. “Men\, in particular\, don’t talk much.”

SUMMARY:Slam Allen at Downtown Barn
DESCRIPTION:Come see the incredible Slam Allen close our 4th season out! \nSlam has been entertaining with his unique blend of soul and blues for over twenty years. Playing the famous Chitlin’ Circuit as well as performing around the world\, Allen’s music and enthusiasm has been shared with thousands of people. For the past five years he has played an important role in the legendary James Cotton Band. “It’s one of the highlights and privileges of my life to play with Cotton” says Allen\, “He is one of the last living legends\, and there’s so much history there. Cotton was directly connected to Muddy Waters — who was a major factor in the blues world as well as being one of my all time favorites. Playing with Cotton is such a great experience for me and there are things you can learn from him that you can’t learn from any school. It’s a great honor.” \nMusic is in Allen’s blood — he got his start from his father and uncles who were known as the Allen Brothers Band. Allen carries on the family legacy wherever he goes. His music runs deep. “When I play\,” says Allen\, “People who may have never heard of me leave the show with a feeling like that we’re old friends or family.” From B.B. King to Otis Redding. Slam has a way of making you feel the Soul of the Music. Sometime you cannot tell if he is doing one of his oringinals or a old blues or soul cover cause he makes all the music his own. \nSlam always plays to a sold-out crowd to make sure you get your ticket!
